Spencer Home Sarasota 2008
A young couple in our church had purchased their first home. It was a fixer and
adding on to the existing structure and didn't have a clue as to what he was doing!
As time went on the outside of the home started falling apart, water was leaking in
and mold was forming inside the walls as the walls, both inside and out,
deteriorated. As the home got worse, so did our economy. The cost of fixing their
home was escalating as work and money coming in was going down for them.
Patrick, Leigh, Leigh's mom who was going through another round with cancer and
their two children, one a newborn, were all living in the home.
Their situation was brought to our attention so I set up a meeting with Patrick and
Leigh to see if there was anything that we could do to help out. Patrick said that
he had the money to purchase all the product needed to fix the outside of their
home, but he didn't have the money to hire someone to do the work and couldn't
do it by himself. I told him that we would put the word out and help him with all
the labor we could and ask the ladies of our church to provide lunch for us each
day we worked.
We spread the word and once Patrick secured all the permits we got to work.
People of all different levels and/or no skill at all showed up to help. We started
tearing down the outside walls, removed the insulation and drywall, wiring and
other electrical items and all of the moldy and rotted wood framing.
We then began the rebuild process, replaced all of the rotted wood, put plywood and
new windows in and then tyvek on the outside of the home. One of the guys took
care of getting the electric all up to code.
One of the weekends a group of guys from the Bowery Mission in NYC were
visiting and a couple of them took some time and came over and helped us too!
We basically had to rip apart his house from the outside in. We always had plenty
of food and drinks to fill us up at lunch time thanks to all the ladies. It took
longer I'm sure than what the Spencer's wanted to have happen, but the outside of
their home is complete and best of all WATERPROOF!!
