Disaster Relief Spring Training Camp Sarasota/Manatee 2008
We strongly feel that our first responsibility is to our home community.  Because
of this we do several things including helping train those in our area that are
interested in learning more and being more involved in disaster relief.

We decided to have two training camps, one at our home church in Sarasota
County and one in Manatee County, the county just north of us at Braden River
Baptist Church.

Gary from Mercy Chefs once again came to our rescue and helped out with the
training.  He brought Mercy One down the first week along with Herman and
Ruth, two Mercy Chefs.  He then flew home for two weeks and flew back for the
second training and took Mercy 2 home.  For cooking at the second training camp
we utilized a few new Mercy Chefs who had been trained at the first training camp!

Mary Jo and I worked with Nancy from Network of Hope to bring this all
together.  We contacted several other people in the area who had experience in
different area of relief work and came up with a great team of instructors for the
trainings.

We opened the day with a general session.  In Sarasota, Ed McCrane, the head of
Sarasota County EOC started things off with a short talk from the county.  We
couldn't get anyone from Manatee county to do the same.  I gave a devotion about
why we do what we do and a small "pep" talk.  Each track leader introduced
themselves and gave a brief overview of what they were going to be speaking on.
When then broke into our track sessions.  The following is the list instructors, the
tracks they taught and a description:

Nancy Kenney-Coordinators/Leaders: If you are the person who is directing, or
would like to direct, a disaster response program in your church or organization,
this is the track for you.  We will be doing an overview of what needs to be
included in a successful response and how to make it happen.  We’ll cover
everything from how to recruit, create, organize, and train teams for a disaster in
our area, or how to have a successful outreach going to other areas, to working
with volunteers, keeping your team psychologically as well as physically safe and
the time line for what will really happen if a disaster struck in this county.  If you
already have a team in your church or you want to start one, this is the track for
you.

Ed Moss/Jim Nichols-Work Teams:  This is one of the biggest areas of need and
one of the ones largest areas where people respond to and build relief teams for.
Topics to be discussed include—how to form a recovery/work team, how to unify
and motivate a recovery/work team, how to clear trees off of structures,   how to
temporary perform roof repair, how to do mud outs, safety equipment and
practices for recovery work and bonus (this seminar only) chain saw use in the
culinary arts.

Gary LeBlanc-Mass Feeding: Do you like to eat?  Do you like to eat well?  Well,
after a disaster, often times utilities are shut down and good, hot meals are a rare
commodity.  Learn how you can turn your church into a center of community in
the event of a disaster where people can gather and get good, hot meals, feeding
the emotional, spiritual needs of those who find themselves hurting in the
aftermath of a disaster.  Learn what it takes to feed people and how you can
interact with others to bring in professional help to your community should a
disaster occur.  Learn food sanitation and safety and basic menu preparation.  You
will also learn how to become part of the Mercy Chef national volunteer network
where you’ll have the opportunity to respond to disasters nationwide.

Carl & Sarah Cadwell-Prayer/Counseling in a Crisis:
Prayers – Pre-crisis and on hand in counseling situations
Preparation at Home for Crisis - Do you have a "To Go" Bag?
What is the difference between Crisis Counseling and regular counseling?
Qualifications and Skills for Crisis Counseling -
AID = Analyze, Inventory, and Direction in Crisis
Considering - Why do People Suffer?  Common Questions asked in crisis.
Types of crisis will be discussed, what to do, including role plays of some crisis
situations.
Various materials helpful for people in crisis will be overviewed - especially
helpful for children.

Curt Hencye-Distribution of Goods:  How to request, collect, store and distribute
goods.  If you are called to this area of ministry, there are many pitfalls that you
can fall into as well as people who are out to con you out of things that have been
donated for relief victims.  Do you accept that semi-truck load of clothes ready to
be dumped as one big pile into your parking lot or not??  Every church should
participate in this area of ministry and should already be stockpiling items so they
are available immediately after a disaster strikes.  Come and join us for more
information.
This track will only be taught as a one level course at 10 AM.

Marion Sortore/Don Burkhardt/Laura Carter Taylor-Advocacy/Resources:  Who is
there to help survivors through the overwhelming process of recuperation?  Who
knows where to find soy milk when your baby is allergic to regular milk?  Who
knows how and where to get help for the myriad of problems that arise in those
first weeks after a disaster?  Who knows how to find the way through the maze of
the FEMA process and the 18 page application?  If you are a person that likes to
make things happen, get the job done and find practical help for people in need,
THIS is the job for you!  The morning session will cover available resources and
the afternoon will be spent learning the FEMA application process.

Ron Wetjen/Bob Davisson-Communications: Alternative communication is vital in
those first days to weeks after a disaster.  Small radios, business radios, ham
radios….  Come learn about the various radios, which ones to use when, how to be
connected to other churches, organizations and the county, and how to support the
disaster response effort in this most crucial mode of service.  Get your questions
answered here!  The morning will be covering the basics for those who are new to
this area.  The afternoon will delve in deeper in both the use of the radios and how
it all works together.

Sarah Martinez/Patrice Burnett-Medical:  Learn how to asses medical needs in a
disaster situation.  You may be one of the first ones to a disaster site or maybe
one of your team members gets hurt while helping out.  Learn some immediate
things that you can look for and do if you come to a physically hurt individual
while you are waiting for professional help.  You’ll learn some real world
scenarios as well as have a question and answer time.
This track will only be taught as a one level course, but will be offered at all three
morning sessions, 9, 10 and 11.

We came up with the idea that everyone could go to level one of three different
tracks in the morning.  We'd break for lunch and networking and then you'd
choose which track you wanted to pursue and do levels 2, 3 & 4 in the afternoon.
Level 4 ended up in a round table discussion among the attendees.  We suggested
that if more than one person from a church or ministry was present then they
should split up to get as much info as possible.  Several people came to both
training sessions to get as much info as they could after they enjoyed the first
sessions!  We ended the day with general session 2 where each track leader came
up and did a summary of what went on during their day's sessions.  Nancy and I
then took some time to go over some general relief issues and suggestions.
Shortly thereafter we closed the training and had dinner together while we spent
some time networking.

We asked that everyone who had any type of relief truck/trailer, etc to bring it to
show others what equipment they had and to give others an idea of what they were
already doing.

We handed out surveys and got positive reviews from everyone.  The only thing
that seemed to be an issue was that there wasn't enough time for everyone to
attend all the tracks!

We'll be praying about having others as the Lord leads.
