Calvary Chapel School 8th Grade Mission Trip 2011
I was asked to lead the 8th grade class mission trip at Calvary Chapel School
to the Bowery Mission in NYC. The Bowery had never allowed anyone under
16 to stay as volunteers in the past and took a chance with me leading them.
There were fifteen 8th graders and twelve adults on the trip. Some of us
arrived just after midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning, the rest arrived
after noon on Sunday. We began serving immediately. I was asked to do the
2 PM chapel service and the group got busy in the kitchen.
Everyone was eager to serve and really amazed the Bowery staff. When we
had planned the trip we thought it was just going to be an ordinary week and
it turned out to be anything but! The Bowery neighborhood had planned a
block party/open house due to a grand opening of a museum on the next
weekend. The mission planned on having an open house on Saturday to be a
part of the festivities. They were planning on 10-20 thousand visitors to the
neighborhood! Because of this the Bowery decided that they wanted to do a
lot of cleaning, painting, and they wanted to start a rooftop garden!
This meant there was a lot of work to do above and beyond the normal
volunteer duties! Everyone was eager to do all they could to help get the
job(s) done. This meant we were getting up and started with devos at 5:30
and ended up with devos at 8 PM. A couple of nights some of us ended up
going back to work after devos. The team was working up until it was time
to for them to leave for the airport.
For devos each of the students were given a portion of scripture from the
book of Ephesians. They all did a great job dissecting the Word!
After the team left I stayed an extra couple of days to help with the open
house. There were a lot of visitors to the Bowery, we lost count after 750, it
was a great turnout. I took over 160 people through on about a dozen tours
from the ground floor all the way to the roof, six stories up!
It was an eventful week and the team really pulled through and was able to
do all the Bowery needed us to do. The Bowery will still maintain their 16
year old policy but the 8th grade class from Calvary School will always be
welcome! Special thanks to the team for living up to the reputation that
proceeded you!
